FAQ
1. So, what is NetUpdate?
NetUpdate is a software application updater. It is used to update software applications that may be installed on an end user's computer.
2. How is it different from other update applications?
NetUpdate is different from other updater applications in that it uses a easier-to-use wizard interface to manage all the updates. With a single instance of NetUpdate installed on the client's computer, you can provide updates for an unlimited number of applications. NetUpdate is more flexible than other updaters in the way it provides updates to end users.
3. Can I install NetUpdate on more than one computer?
The NetUpdate client application can be installed on an unlimited number of computers in order to support an unlimited number of applications. However, the NetUpdate Manager can only be installed on a single computer per license.
4. Do I need a separate license for each application I support?
No. A single license can be used to support updates for an unlimited number of applications.
5. Is NetUpdate reliable? Will my file(s) be safe?
Yes. NetUpdate is very safe. It used the same proven and trusted Windows API used by many of today's applications, including Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
6. Is NetUpdate secure?
Yes. NetUpdate is very secure. There is a double digital signature check to ensure the originally assigned servers are being used and the designed files are being downloaded. Also, once the files are downloaded, an additional CRC checksum can be used to ensure the files did not become corrupt during the download process.
7. Does NetUpdate work with Vista?
Yes. As NetUpdate installs as a Windows service it works seamlessly with Windows Vista. Using trusted technology, it navigates through the UAC without displaying annoying prompts to end users.
8. Does NetUpdate support compressed or zipped files?
Yes. NetUpdate, starting with version 2.04, supports compressed files with an option to encrypt the file. If you have many files to update, compressing the update files saves on bandwidth.
9. Does NetUpdate support incremental updates?
Yes. NetUpdate supports incremental or progressive updates. This is ideal if you only need to provide patches on a regular basis without updating the entire application.
10. Do I have to do incremental updates, or can I just provide the latest update?
No. You do not have to provide incremental updates if you don't want to. NetUpdate is very flexible. You can provide incremental updates and then switch to a single update if the latest update includes all previous improvements. You can then also continue with incremental updates until the next full release.
11. Can I control NetUpdate from my own application?
Yes. Though NetUpdate is installed as a separate application, you can control any request to check for updates very easily. NetUpdate can receive a special WM_CHECKUPDATES Windows message instructing it to check for updates in a variety of ways.
12. Can I customize the look and fell of NetUpdate to match my own application?
Yes. The latest version of NetUpdate allows the developer or IT manager to change the look and feel of the end-user's NetUpdate client. All logos and text can be changed to suit your particular requirements.
13. How many languages are supported?
Four languages are directly supported: English, French, German and Spanish. However, as the language resources can be edited, any language can be supported by implementing the required translations.
14. Is NetUpdate an installer?
No, not in the traditional sense of an installer like InstallSheild or INNO Setup. However, NetUpdate does install updates using the Self-Upgrade protocol, and can perform many of the basic functions of an installer. If your requirements involve replacing a number of files, changes to the registry, installing icons and shortcuts, then a traditional installer should be used. In this case, NetUpdate can deliver the installer to the end user's computer, launch the installer automatically and check that everything was installed correctly.
15. What happens if there is no internet connection?
If there is no internet connection, NetUpdate just waits until a connection is established before checking for updates.
16. Is there a tray icon?
Yes. There is a tray icon with a pop-up menu available to end users.
17. Can I hide the tray icon?
Yes, the tray icon can be hidden if needed. Alternatively, some of the pop-up menu items can be hidden if the icon is not hidden.
